A revenge/heist tale with a grimdark twist.
This book is set in Styria, a land reminiscent of late medieval or early Renaissance Italy with its warring city states. The story focuses around Monza Murcatto, a mercenary formerly in the employ of Duke Orso. After Orso betrays her and leaves her for dead, she assembles a team and heads out for revenge. Didn't knock my socks off the way the First Law Trilogy did but it was great to return to that world and meet new characters. Much darker than the previous books. For me, the supporting characters made the novel most interesting. Pretty terrific last 150 pages.

Dark, gritty, violent, bloody all with Abercrombie's underlying sense of humor. These are some of the realest (is that a word) characters in fantasy and I am in awe of his writing!!!
