Glorious stuff. The Khan Ulric is leading an army of a hundred thousand barbarians against the fortress Dros Delnoch. Arrayed against him is a much smaller, but well-defended host including Druss the Legend, old, fat, coaxed out of retirement but still a force to be reckoned with.

Definitely a first, and imperfect, novel, but still difficult to put down as events move inexorably onwards.

I really enjoyed this. The characters of Druss, Rek, and Virae were quite likeable. The villain, Ulric, was really compelling. I didn’t care too much for the secondary world setting. It was quite vague. From my perspective there were only three cultures: the Nadir, the Drenai, and the Ventrians. The Ventrians aren’t really explored. That culture is a subtext. The Nadir are generix barbarians. And the Drenai are pretty much the Romans. The ending was quite compelling.

The magic is interesting, but far from the center of this story, which focuses on an aged legend, Druss, and the people in his orbit as he leads a doomed resist ...more
