This is a sword & sorcery adventure and a very good one. It's a little similar to Prince of Persia or maybe that new Assassin's Creed game. It's sword & sandal and historical fantasy. The story follows calculating scholar Dabir and somewhat brash and fiery Asim. Both are duty-bound and have a more obviously "good" sense of honor than many sword & sorcery heroes. The story feels mundane enough at first but becomes weird and cosmic. Very much worth your time! ...more

The cover of this book is what first hooked me. Then an endorsement on the cover by Glen Cook added to the interest. I began reading and was delighted that it was in first person perspective. After that my interest waned. The narrator of the story is Asim the Captain of the Guards who is very blunt and has a strong sense of integrity which colors his narration. He and the Scholar Dabir are charged with retrieving a couple of ancient golden door pulls. Very mundane. Their misadventures become red ...more
