Lord Dunsany wrote true fantasy, the sort that had the ability to evoke genuine awe and inspire in the reader a desire for something beyond the trammels of the mundane and the everyday world. While his short stories are perhaps the pinnacle of his craft (and arguably the pinnacle of all fantastic fiction) this rare novel is an absolute gem, and a high watermark of fantastic fiction. Edward Plunkett parece um personagem de RPG. Voluntário na primeira guerra, caçador, professor em Atenas, campeão de tiro e de xadrez (sendo nerd a ponto de criar uma variação do jogo) e, claro, escritor. I found this through the ol' Appendix N reading list and it's not hard to see how this influenced D&D in many ways, but it has value well beyond that novelty. This is a wonderful fantasy tale in the vein of classic fairy tales, a welcome break from the kind of epics we mostly associate with the genre these days. By the final run up to the ending I was really immersed in what I was reading and I know I'll be looking up more of his books.
