Interesting story, definitely weird and original. This novel is referred to as a classic in horror literature by many reputable sources which is what led me to reading it in the first place. Starting it I was immediately pulled in; the beginning had an almost Blackwood feel to it, and I had a feeling I'd enjoy it very much, but at a certain point the story reaches a lull. A looooooooooong, dull lull.

This book supposedly inspired H.P. Lovecraft, and it proves to be disturbing and poignant. The terror evoked by living in a remote mansion in the Irish countryside while being menaced by an unspeakable horror is conveyed clearly and starkly by Hodgeson's prose. Highly recommended. ...more
