Interesting story, definitely weird and original. This novel is referred to as a classic in horror literature by many reputable sources which is what led me to reading it in the first place. Starting it I was immediately pulled in; the beginning had an almost Blackwood feel to it, and I had a feeling I'd enjoy it very much, but at a certain point the story reaches a lull. A looooooooooong, dull lull.

This is definitely one of those cult classics of horror fiction that deserves to be better known. Imagine all the madness and grotesque horror of Evil Dead told in the style of H.G. Wells' The Time Machine; Its vision of the dark and eerie heart of the universe is one those images that stays with you.

This book supposedly inspired H.P. Lovecraft, and it proves to be disturbing and poignant. The terror evoked by living in a remote mansion in the Irish countryside while being menaced by an unspeakable horror is conveyed clearly and starkly by Hodgeson's prose. Highly recommended.
