Another fantasy anthology, sequel of sorts to Fearsome Journeys: The New Solaris Book of Fantasy. This one, as per the title, is all about the magic. As always, it's an anthology and some stories I liked better than others, but not a clinker in the bunch.

Personal favorites: Another Sir Hereford & Mr. Finch piece by Garth Nix, and stories by K.J. Parker, Nina Kiriki Hoffman and Kaaron Warren. But if you ask me again, I might choose others.

It's been a number of years since I gave up my Fantasy & Science Fiction and Analog subscriptions, but this is a reminder that short story form F&SF is amazing--and also runs to the poignant. Maybe that sort of story is what comes to mind when putting together a "Fearsome" anthology? Or maybe it's that a sad/bittersweet ending is easier to take at the end of a short piece, vs an entire novel ?("He loved Big Brother" aside!)

That said, these were beautiful stories and I loved the variety.
