Elric of Shelbyville - sorry, Melnibone, is not your typical tonk, head-lopping hero, he's introspective, morally conflicted (though not about boning his cousin), and the reluctant ruler of the haughty race of nob-heads known as the Melniboneans. Another classic, collection of short classics, I've ignored for too long. What a pleasant throwback in style and characterization. Moorcock writes with an elevated tone and laid-back pace that mirrors the decadent world he has created perfectly. It is a style that forces the reader to take a breath and settle in, it is definitely not geared for the impatient. Elric the character is also a challenge to get to know and appreciate.
