A couple married for over thirty years is bound to share conflicts, compassion, disagreements and love, but for Harold (Hal) and his wife Margaret experience the worst of marriage. An abusive and alcoholic husband, and a meek submissive wife willing to play by the rules, they are trying to raise their daughter Katheri “People who see things,” I said, “do they kill people?”

A couple married for over thirty years is bound to share conflicts, compassion, disagreements and love, but for Harold (Hal) and his wife Margaret experience the worst of marriage. An abusive and alcoholic husband, and a meek submissive wife willing to play by the rules, they are trying to raise their daughter Katherine and keep her away from the hatred. Condescending and hateful towards his life and family, Hal was a best selling author on the streets, but a monstrous man behind shut doors. Beating his wife for any inflection, a simply missed phone call from the grocery store could be enough to trigger him. Constantly moving house to house, they were overjoyed when a beautiful Victorian house but the market at an incredible price tag. Diving headfirst after the first walkthrough, the couple would move into a house filled to the brim with paranormal. Every September the activity levels would grow; blood poring from the walls, apparitions of badly injured children and the constant screaming the entire night. Victims of Theodore Vale (Master Vale) in the eighteen hundreds, several children would vanish over the years and never be found ever again. Cruel torture inflicted including removal of limbs, dismemberment and sliced with blades, these children died in pain and terror. Vengeful spirits who desperately feared Vale, it would not only affect those he directly killed while alive. Previous residents found themselves under his spell, where Jasper set his wife Blythe on fire in the fireplace before killed Fredricka with an axe blow to the skull. Now, Margaret is turning to closest friends Edie for help as she's the only other person who sees to see them

Angelica and her head, Julian and his intestines, Charles and Constance and their lacerations, Thomas or Tobias or whoever and his arm (or lack thereof), the boy with no legs and the trail of blood he was leaving behind him.

Margaret, help me. Margaret, come find me. Margaret, I need you.

When her husband Hal decided enough was finally enough, he pleased with his wife to leave the property and escape with him, yet she was adamant she would never leave those walls. Four years in and she was getting used to the nightmares if September, yet Hal wasn't hanging in by more than a thread now. Leaving late with only the clothes on his back, he would return three nights later armed with gasoline and a mission to burn it to the ground. Descending into the basement alone, he would be killed by Master Vale and his body would start to decay right under his wife's nose. Their daughter Katherine is distressed by being unable to get ahold of her father, and forces a visit onto her mother in the heart of September. Hopeful her daughter won't be affected by the ghosts, she instead allows her daughter to believe she's mentally ill and unstable. As Fredricka moves pillows and furniture and starts the kettle for tea, she plays as a forgetful older woman while the search for her husband is gathering steam. Going to the police well after a month after he first vanished seemed suspicious enough, but when they encounter the flies and odd behavior they truly begin pining her as a suspect.

“Begone, you foul creature, you fiend who has wiled your way out of the gates of Hell. You will tremble in fear under the might of our Lord. For it is He who cast you down from the heavens and sent you to endless destruction. And it is He who will render you powerless yet again.”

With Katherine refusing to leave things alone, police soon come knocking on Margaret's door and discover Hal's decomposing and badly mutilated body in the basement. Preparing to arrest her in his death officers are horrified to see the apparitions and watch their fellow friends have their bones backwards. With her daughter at her side, they begin the process of banishing Vale from the house but it'll take the strength of all his victims to truly destroy him. Injured by those he killed in the ways he harned them, it'll come to an end with Fredricka burying the axe in his skull. Finally, with his evil expunged from the property, the spirits are set free and find themselves at peace for the first time in decades and centuries. Only Fredricka would remain, content as her life as a maid and taking care of Margaret. Morning the death of he father, she knows understands the nightmares September held for her family.

Margaret is very good at adapting. She’s been doing it her whole life after all. She establishes the rules for her situation and she follows them. That’s how she survives.
When she and her husband buy their first home after their daughter goes to college, the house is more than they bargained for. Margaret believes everything is survivable. She can adapt to this. It’s only really a problem when September rolls around each year. What with the bleeding walls and dead children everywhere. But Marga ...more

Holy hell 🤯 what a wild ride that was. I can’t believe I slept on this book for so long, because it was incredible! Twisty, comical at moments, mind effy but wonderful. Completely recommend! I just wish the daughter Katherine would stop yelling at my eyeballs the whole time I read😆
