This was an ok story about two widowers becoming friends over fishing with some spooky foreboding. Unfortunately, it then became a loooong convoluted flashback to Victorian(?) Europe with shades of the occult. Had there been fewer characters or shorter scenes it may have worked. But we go from two character first-person to multicast third-person and my give-a-damn waned to nothing.

It's painful for me to read about real tragedy. Even though I love horror it is the fantastic nature of it that buffers the impact of reading about characters meeting grisly ends. The beginning of this book made me sad and I just wanted to get past it. But it was a good thing to read cause it created empathy/sympathy for the characters. I was really looking forward to this, but was quite dissapointed. I very much wanted to get in to new authors and wanted to be supportive but I had to put this down as I couldn't finish it. Too much happens in this book too quickly and there is hardly any proper build up. I love Lovecraftian type of stories but the writing style is too economical and abbreviated to draw you in to the 'weird'.
