3.5 stars rounded down because it's just not quite a 4 star read.

I liked this but didn't love it, though I will go ahead and read the 2nd book. I thought there was a little too much werewolf politics embedded in the mystery side of the story, and I know Briggs has created a world where patriarchy rules, but I still find it hard to swallow. I think I'd rather be in a hyena pack - theirs is always a female pack leader.

Then again, a lone coyote sounds pretty desirable too. ...more

This is one of those books where you should not judge it by the cover. If it wasn't for a group read coming up, I probably would have passed this book by without a second thought...but it's actually a very good, interesting book. It actually surprised me at how quickly I got hooked on the supernatural world that Mercy Thompson lives in: a world of werewolves, witches, fae, goblins, vampires... and trolls were mentioned too. I love the idea of urban fantasy, but whenever I go to pick something to read, the covers, the summaries, the first few pages all leave something to be wanting.
