A fascinating novel, somewhere between chronicle and character study. It's long, but it doesn't feel long. You get attached to the characters, or at least intrigued by them, even the minor ones. There is brilliance in there, but also some elements which readers should find uncomfortable, unfortunately (although less so as the book progresses).
