Originally, I read this back in high school after ABC ran a 6.5 hr miniseries starring Jane Seymour and Timothy Bottoms. (Lloyd Bridges and Soon Teck Oh were also in, and they really brought Sam Hamilton and Lee to life.) Sam and Lee are the best characters in this novel, and Steinbeck's insights into the immigrant experience in CA, as expressed through them is fascinating. The religious nonsense, not so much.

A terrific book and tremendous study in character development. For me it is almost a hard book to describe, on one hand nothing really happens, just 2 families living their lives and dealing with everything that goes with it, on the other hand it is a book of non stop activity and was hard to put down. I suppose my only criticism and reason for 4 stars is because it was a little heavy handed with the allegory but all in all a great book---it even makes me consider giving Grapes of Wrath another
