I declared this book "my favorite book" at a time when it was meaningful to me to have a favorite book. My true favorite book is Gone With the Wind (or is it The Thorn Birds?), but this book is amazing, too. I want to re-read it. It was so long ago that I declared it my favorite. There were themes and situations that really resonated with me at age 18. ...more

Now that was weird

This book was really strange and at first I wasn't liking it. I was about to give up because I didn't like the story, but I kept going because the characters stayed with me after I put the Kindle down. Owen is something special and his influence begins to impact everybody even the reader. I finished the book thinking "Wow, what just happened" I think I need to reread to really savor the book as read it rather quickly.

John Irving never disappoints. A master at character building. He gets you from the very first sentence. By the time you are finished with this novel you feel like you have lost a good friend. Masterful story teller.

This is a story that is very different than any other book I have read. This story, is set in Gravesend New Hampshire, of a man (John Wheelwright) who is struggling to come to terms with his past (1950s/60s) that reflects on his childhood & young adulthood when he lost his mother, befriended a boy (Owen Meany) with an unusual affinity for self-destiny, and discovered a sense of faith he never had before.
