This is one of the greatest works of existentialism ever written. If you don't realize that what you are reading is philosophy, in fiction form (the best medium for philosophy I think) then you might wonder about a story that leaves you shrugging your shoulders.

The other way to look at this book is the inner workings in the mind of perhaps someone with Asperger's syndrome or some other condition.
