A short, first person tale of a 20-something clerk, who probably has undiagnosed Asperger's.
He describes his life and the people in it with analytical detachment, even when on trial for a pointless murder. He's a stranger to his closest family, though not perhaps to himself. The death of his mother (whose age he can't even remember) is more of an inconvenience than reason for grieving.
Likened by some to Kafka, and there are some similarities, but it is a much more conventional style of story. ...more

It's like Catcher in the Rye for adults, but infinitely more interesting, and better.

I was very surprised at how simplistic this book was. I was expecting something much more difficult and hard to read. The story was straight forward although not very interesting. I am sure the events could happen and Camus was just writing about something that could happen to anyone. However, the character seemed rather unrealistic. Is anyone really that cold?

The main character so removed from his own feelings made me think of myself at times. Occasionally I think so what, what's the big deal about life, love and death. Most of the time this is not how I feel but I can still relate when the dark times come over me. Is this guy depressed or just out of touch with himself and his surrounding. He has feelings for the suffering of a dog but not a human that is beaten or even his taking a life. This book sticks with you for a while.
