Definitely feels like someone's first novel, Amis has a lot of prosaic talent, but he doesn't seem to know what he wants to say. Even worse, at first, he doesn't have anything to say at all: the beginning of Lucky Jim feels like Confederacy of Dunces England Edition: everyone is dumb and I hate everyone, just expressed with a bit more panache.
