This is enticingly vague and atmospheric at first, but I quickly became uneasy on behalf of, and then about, the fugitive. The cover image of this book is a former film star Louise Brooks - the inspiration of his book. Our author seems to have held her in high esteem, some say that he even loved her.

An interesting and original plot. Brilliant! Quite an intriguing book.

Our narrator -an escaped convict; nameless throughout the story- avoids the law arriving by boat on a mysterious island. The tides are crazy, the island is "haunted" . Events happen out of the blue. ( two moons and two suns in the sky )

This Argentinian surrealist novel was the influence of recent film and television shows, but, thankfully, I haven't seen those so I could look at the book in a totally separate way. I found it fascinating as an early-20th century view of frightening technology and the essence of what makes us and keeps us human beings. I loved the setting, the mystery, and the confused narrator.
