By chance, I re-read Candide by Voltaire a week ago. And I realize: George Babbitt IS Candide, the 20th century man of eternal progress & a little shaky belief in this, the best of all worlds. He is a buffoon, and he is surprisingly endearing to me in his ever human vanity yet self doubt.
Sherwood Anderson deserved his Nobel prize - but what's up with the Upton Sinclair beef in his books?

George F. Babbitt is a character that I hate, but I can relate to, and in relating to him I begin to hate myself a little.
