One of the reviews on the back of my edition describes Middlesex as "cheekily written", and I can't top that.
Eugenides clearly has a ton of talent for describing emotions and worries, although he occasionally strays too far into the cloyingly overwrought (especially when he's talking about violence). I also felt a bit of the "yes I'm bourgeois but I'm also a liberal" sensibility that plagues modern American writing come through during the chapter on the Long, hot summer of '67: Jeff almost brea ...more

It surprised me that this book got so many negative reviews, I actually quite enjoyed it. For a 500+ page book I flew through it, because it had a nice flow to it, and was interesting enough to not want to put it down. I thought the narrative style was intriguing, and my biggest criticism is that the story ended almost where it should have began. I loved the history leading up to Cal and her discovery, and I think it was necessary, but I wanted more beyond her 16 year old self. I think Eugenides
