I am of split minds about Jeffrey Eugenides' “Middlesex” – ironic given that it is narrated by Cal (Cal/ Callie) a hermaphrodite who's a genetic male (with XY chromosomes) but has both a tiny penis and an infertile vagina. Sure, it is an interesting set-up. And given that much of the book is about the Greek immigrant experience in twentieth-century America, using Cal as a narrator allows Eugenides to tap a rich Greek cultural heritage, casting Cal as a modern-day Tiresias, the blind prophet popu ...more
