Read the Burton Raffel translation, which felt quite well done if not quite particularly French-sounding. Stendahl has an excellent sense for systems and power relations, which feature far more prominently than the impetus hero and his absurd antics. Some of the story elements feel a bit like a short cut, like Julien's perfect memory standing in for a more believable bourgeois success story.
