"The Unbearable Lightness of Being" was the first grown-up Postmodern book I read in the 80's. Having been spoon-fed traditional fiction (which tells a story) and Modernism (which attempts to trace a person's psychology, often using stream-of-consciousness and rhetorical tricks) in high school of college lit classes, I was shocked at the newness.

The Unbearable Lightness of Being is a novel written by the Czech writer Milan Kundera. It has multiple dimensions; from the political point of view it is written against the Soviet aggression of Czechoslovakia, on the philosophic point of view it is reply to Nietzsche's concept of the “eternal return” which says that the universe has been recurring ad infinitum.
