I think the idea of one author piggy-backing, uninvited, on the characters and plot of another, is decidedly dodgy. However, this is widely regarded as a classic, and as I've read Jane Eyre many times (review here: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...), I thought I should finally try this prequel novella.

Jane Eyre was one of the first books I've ever read and loved and since I was such a little girl when I was acquainted with the first Mrs Rochester I have to admit that I really hated her for destroying Jane's happiness and that I wasn't really sad when she died. So, it really took me years to interest myself in her and finally read Wide Sargasso Sea, but now that I finally read this book I do not regret it. It was really interesting and easily read. More towards 3.5: This book was recommended by someone who shared the same enthusiasm of Jane Eyre. I rarely knew her, but recommended I read this book, as it is based on the "crazy" wife of Mr. Rochester who is locked up in the dungeon. I was intrigued and when I had the chance read this book. I really appreciate the writing style after reading a not so good written book and it was great to go into the Carribean setting. I had to read this for a class. It's a "prequel" to Bronte's Jane Eyre, and attempts to fill in Mr. Rochester's past. However, in order for this book not to alter Jane Eyre in any way, it has to expand only on what Bronte has already said, which--to me--makes this pointless to read. I think all that Bronte said about his past was really all that needed to be said in order to understand Rochester in Jane Eyre. ...more
