Atwood has created a near future where the environment and then the society have broken down. It is being told by Snowman, who used to be Jimmy, and he is keeping watch over the Crakers - created through bioengineering by his friend Crake to be a perfect hominid that is always happy.

It takes a bit to learn all of the characters -- their timelines overlap and some change names. The story is complex, but striking as we see one of many possible futures.
