I love this novel for its language as well as its venom. Libertine fiction with a twist of morality. Also, one can consider it a noir novel with a genuine anti-hero at the helm of the plot. Anti-heroes are rare; they take the place of the usual hero, drive the story, and they may or may not receive what they richly deserve. The Marquise de Merteuil is an anti-hero, and given what she has to say about the way ancien regime society is organized against women, one might be forgiven for thinking her
