Spirited Catherine Morland, at 17, samples the delights of Bath society, along with the pressures and betrayals that go with it, mixing with those more wealthy and educated than she is. At times her imagination runs away with her (it all gets rather gothic), but at other times, she takes things at face value and doesn't see the obvious, which is part of her charm, both to the reader and some of the men she meets. How did I miss reading this one?? Hilarious and with just enough mortification for our heroine. Much broader than her other works; I love her tongue-in-cheek addresses to the reader.

How Jane Austen is considered a writer of 'romance' I am not entirelly sure. It's not that romantic...but I'll get to that in a few.
I give this book a high rating because when I read these characters I feel like I've met them in real life under different names. I'm sure I'm not alone. Although not my favorite Austen novel, I loved this satirical take on gothic romances and the impressionability of a young girl dreaming of adventures. Catherine Morland is a sweet heroine with an overactive imagination and I could relate to her desire to see things in real life that she read about in novels. Henry Tilney is a likable suitor and it was nice to read about the friendship between Eleanor and Catherine. I would like to reread this work after I read "Mysteries of Udolpho" by Radcliff
