From having read this and Never Let Me Go, there are at the very least two things Kazuo Ishiguro excels at:
- building a very detailed (micro-)universe which we only discover through his character's eyes
- bittersweet missed chances and opportunities, even when the characters don't see them as such.
Although this micro-universe was much more "real" than Never Let Me Go's, I still found it quite fascinating. You do get caught in Stevens' ramblings, as much in what is said than in what isn't. This al ...more
