Tolstoy is a master of description. This is a realist novel (although the author later rejected this in Anna Karenina and War and Peace) and thick with questions and philosophy. I was in awe of Tolstoy's description of child birth and the horse race. Wow. I questioned myself along with Levin. I read that Tolstoy was one of the first, if not the first to use internal monologue and it stands out as very effective in this novel.
