Oh, god, rereading this book and thinking about how much of 60's masculinity was based on FREE men who LOVE women who are also FREE like them because they are TOUGH and FREE and that is the only way to be a REAL MAN.
BUT it's also an amazing rendition of the horrors of mental institutionalization, I enjoyed much of the dialogue and the story-telling. Beautiful descriptions. A time capsule in writing. ...more

In between 3 and 4 for me. I could argue either way.. Upgrading to a 4 as the good parts outweigh the negatives for me. Some of the racial/ gender issues bothered me initially. Upgraded review to a 5 did to how much I reference this novel
