This story had me from the beginning when American southerners stuff Becky Crocker cake mixes in their luggage for a Christian mission to the Congo to convert the African pagans. Unbeknownst to the southerners, western-style ovens are non-existent, replaced by fires in homes that have no windows or glossy, linoleum floors.

The only Kingsolver book I've read, this is one of my favorites. A study of morality, risk, conviction and finding a way out of a bond to fundamentalism forged by the father of four girls. An outstanding book. ...more
