What Members Thought

Having read this book, I can see why it is a classic. I can see why this is on so many "Required Reading" lists. It is very well written - it's like stepping into a time machine: you can taste the dust, feel the hunger and desperation, and the whole injustice of it all. Your heart moves with each of the characters as their stories progress. It is more than a snapshot of a time. When you read the last line and close the book - it feels like a memory, still stark and raw.

This book was a bit of a slow burner to begin with but by about halfway through I started to enjoy it. I loved the host of characters and the strength of the family unit. I also understood how angry Steinbeck must have been to write this book - it definitely comes across!
