Driven off the farm, Steinbeck's epic describes an incredibly tragic and heartbreaking Journey for Tom and his family. Pressing from terrible to worse, these squaters seem almost blinded by the eternal search for shelter and work, and his story paints vivid devastation and disaster as they trudge West seeking relief. I imagine that local immigrants must daily experience a simular walk in search of work and securty.
