There isn't much I could say about The Hobbit that hasn't already been gushed about here or everywhere else, so it is enough to say that I am currently kicking myself for having ignored until now those entirely well-founded praises that this amazing, amazing book deserves. In fifth grade, every day after lunch our teacher would read a book to us. And this was how I first experienced the Hobbit - as a book read aloud to a room full of fifth and sixth graders of various reading interests and ability who were suddenly quiet and interested. And so I asked for the whole set for Christmas, and Santa so provided.
