It was a highly readable and enjoyable book. Although written for children, it's entertaining and thought-provoking for adults as well. No, the characterization isn't terribly deep, except for Bilbo who finds reserves of pluck, perseverance, and practicality he didn't think he had. What characterization there is for the other characters tends to be subtle and left for the reader's imagination.
