This science fiction, philosophical classic was first published in 1931. In a top-down run society, the governing elite determine the most important societal values and pursue these values to the exclusion of all others. The result is a society that is remarkably cohesive and smoothly running and that produces a high level of comfort and happiness among its people - and that is horrifying to read about.
