It was my 6th attempt! And I finally read it! Yayy!
Now that I have read it, I can see its appeal - and its adaptations and influences over so many stories. There are 3 distinct character journeys:
A wife and her lifelong trial where she has to wear her ignominy in public because she created a crime of passion by getting involved in an illicit affair
A priest who had not transcended above his bodily needs and yet can't act like a man of flesh and blood. The expectation of what and how he should be ...more

Although I am also a high-school student, I was not FORCED to read this book, I came to it out of free will. Since I am from Hong Kong, The Scarlet Letter is not on my school's required reading list.
I bought this book since I love 19th century literature and forbidden love stories, I read the blurb on goodreads and felt really interested, unchecked passion, star-crossed lovers, sin and guilt, sounded like my type of book. Yes, I am a sucker for serious, theatrical, dark romantic tragedies.

I read this book because it was an assignment from school. I didn't even want to open the book, I don't know why, but then I realized I was committing a huge mistake!
That woman is just gracious! She is the best example of how women were unjustly treated and still are in some places. She overcomes every humiliation, every obstacle, every bad look and commentary. She keeps her pride and her dignity even though everyone struggle to take it away from her.
