It is meant to be a classic. But I was so bored. I think it is mostly due to how classics often have an introduction. Which is fine. The introduction / analysis gave the story completely away. Why not put that stuff at the end of the book? Between some person's analysis and the author's introduction, that was literally 25% of the book!

The priest who is meant to come across as a saint on earth is someone I found cowardly, selfish and despicable. The supposed villain is the most human of the lot
