I'm glad to have read this classic, but I ended a bit disappointed following Dumas' The Count of Monte Cristo which is one of my all time favorites. Typical of the time period, perhaps, this novel tended to be a bit slow in development and overly dramatic, with characters taking personal affront at the slightest indecency and taking matters into their own hands for revenge.
