Edward Ferrars and Edmund Bertram are probably my least favorite Austen heroes. Though Edward is better than Edmund.

Sense and Sensibility is easily one of my favourite books by Jane Austen and as a result, one of my favourite classics. I re-read it with a fantastic group of bookstagrammers recently and it reminded me why I love it so much.⁣

This is the story of the Dashwood family - a mother and three daughters, Elinor, Marianne and Margaret who are forced to leave their family home when their father dies as the estate is entailed upon a half brother, John Dashwood. He is expected to “do right” by the girls b Sense and Sensibility is easily one of my favourite books by Jane Austen and as a result, one of my favourite classics. I re-read it with a fantastic group of bookstagrammers recently and it reminded me why I love it so much.⁣

He is expected to “do right” by the girls but is talked into giving them much lesser than he should by his opinionated wife, Fanny. ⁣

At the time of moving, Elinor had begun to make a connection with one of Fanny’s brothers, Edward and after the move, Marianne also finds herself falling in love with the charismatic and open-hearted John Willoughby. The sisters are opposites with Elinor determined to shut away her feelings and Marianne desperate to express them. The reader discovers how this works for the family as life continues but the world continues to provide obstacles and surprises. ⁣

I can’t go any further with this review without gushing about how much I love the film, starring Emma Thompson, Kate Winslet and Alan Rickman. It’s one of the best adaptations of a classic that I’ve ever seen and so faithful to the original novel. One of the most beautiful things about Austen as a writer is how she writes characters that you can fall in love with or be completely exasperated by! She has a snarky and very intelligent wit that is not ashamed to poke fun at convention and all the rules of propriety that were rife at that time. ⁣

More specifically, her female leads are second to none. Elinor and Marianne could not be more different in personality but they both captured my heart which also broke a little bit for them too when they were suffering. I don’t think I’ll ever get bored of re-reading this novel, a true classic in every sense of the word. ⁣

Surprisingly, I was really happy that I watched the BBC version before reading the book- I felt like it helped me understand some of the subtleties of the story better. I didn't like Pride and Prejudice when I read it a few years ago, but loved this one! ...more
