Why so many marginal characters? or were they important and I missed their importance? The ones who come back made for a novelistic sweet surprise; the ones who never returned made for unnecessary confusion.

The story begins when the main character in the novel, Michael Henchard, sells his wife and newborn daughter after getting drunk on furmity laced with rum. Even though he swears off alcohol for the following 21 years his character improves little. He becomes successful in business and politics but due to his highly flawed character he cannot maintain his success.
