I started crying. I started crying really hard. Then, I started crying really hard. I started crying. I started crying really hard. Then, I started crying really hard. I started crying, and then I started crying. Then, I started crying again. I started to cry really hard. (And then I started crying because?) I started to cry really hard. When my niece told me this was one of the best books she had ever read, I moved it to the top of my "to read" list. After slogging through the first half of the book, I called my niece for a summary of the rest. Couldn't get through it; only in honor of my sweet, smart, beautiful Bibi do I give it 4 stars. At first, I had a really hard time getting into this book, not because of the content or the letter format, but because of how the narrator talked. It seemed like he was really immature, even though he was supposed to be this profoundly smart, misunderstood kid. Sometimes funny, sometimes emotional, this is a very touching novel. We follow the coming of age of young Charlie and, to a certain extent, his friends, in the not so distant world of the 1990s. Personnally, I was really drawn to Charlie, his high intelligence and his sensitivity, and some of the things written really resonated in me.
I expected a different ending, but that one was brilliantly executed, although I wish we could have followed our protagonists a little while longer.

Intimate book and look at the life and experiences of a troubled and a typical teenager. Loved it. Loved the importance given to the arts.

I enjoyed this book as a teen for it's earnestness, and as a springboard to find great books, music and movies.
I enjoyed re-reading it today for it's subtle and gentle portrayal of depression, anxiety, and coping with emotional trauma.
Either way, for such a short "easy" book, there's plenty of value in picking it up. ...more
