"Madame Bovary, c'est moi," says Flaubert, and unfortunately I think that sentiment is true for many, many, many of us. I don't feel comfortable giving this one a rating right now.
I think the story is pretty meaningful. Even though it focuses on characters who are not quite likeable, I enjoyed parts of it because I had a heads up: the summary basically said to focus on the form of the story so here's what I got:
Emma doesn't have a backstory, even though the whole friggin book is about her. We're may pitty her, but we're never invited to sympathize with her or the things she does.

Interesting book, How could anyone like any of these characters. I found myself struggling to read it.
