This is one of those books that isn't as good as the movie.
Westley and Buttercup are really fickle in their feelings for each other, I'd like to think that the author is making a point (kind of like the original "princess and the frog") but having watched the movie first, its hard to get invested in them as characters.
Also, (spoiler alert) they are really horrible parents (end spoiler)

Charming. Clearly written with intriguing, well drawn characters and sparkling dialog.
That's my one-sentence review. Sure, the story is an unbelievable fairy tale with all of its "real world satire" removed as the narrator edited out all but the "good parts" of a fictional book that he is allegedly abridging. So it is supposed to be an unbelievable, Disney-like adventure.

I didn't think I would ever come across a scenario where I preferred the movie to the book, but here we are. Maybe it is just my nostalgia and my memory is unfairly biased, but I wasn't a huge fan of the book. I didn't like any of the narrative asides from the author, nor the pseduo-autobigraphical sections. I'll have to rewatch the movie for a fair comparison, but I don't think it will take much for me to prefer it over the book.
