I am taking a "Film as Literature" class and we had to watch The Shining and do a psychological criticism on it, so I thought to myself that I should read the book that the movie it was based on to give me more of an in depth look into the characters. In the past I haven't been much of a Stephen King fan, but given the fact that I loved 11/22/63, and that Doctor Sleep, The Shining's sequel, has just come out, I wanted to give this a chance before reading Doctor Sleep. And I'm glad I did. The exposition is a little slow & it took me a bit to get used to the writing style, but I feel it added to setting up Jack Torrance's mental state so the ultimate climax is that much more powerful. What's not so great about The Shining? The answer: nothing. This one has a permanent place on my bookshelf, with a special spot reserved in the freezer whenever the need should arise. ;-)
