My first Stephen King, and my first proper horror novel will be my last. I certainly didn't expect to be bored, but I was. After 338 pages / two thirds of the book, I decided life's too short to waste on a book I'm not enjoying.

I wouldn't necessarily say that this is Stephen King at his best….but it's pretty close. I watched the movie a long time ago…it made enough of an impression that I remember it 25 or 30 years later. While I think the movie was scarier, the novel is a MUCH better story.

I have only read two other King books (The Dark Half and It). While I like most things supernatural, it was hard to enjoy this story which has a really good plot--a haunted hotel that wants to take in a little boy's soul--because it was so long. I was almost tempted to drive to the store for the hard copy (I read the ebook) just so I could line through the excess.
