Put this one off for a while because “Thomas Pynchon develops the voice that later becomes Thomas Pynchon” is as daunting as it is appealing. It’s worth it for his introduction. And nothing is as tedious as “Confessions of Fausto Maijstral.”

The introduction and final story are some of Pynchon’s best writing, maybe because they are so different than anything else he has done but they are so effective and engaging
