A rare book. The power of the prose fills the thinness of the characters and makes you disregard the ambivalence of the plot. Reading it the first time around, I'm not sure how many people would realise who Somon's killers are or that the beast is actually a dead pilot. But then that is in itself a testament to a true classic, a book that you have to re-read. I have read this book 2 or 3 times. Decided to read it on November 8, 2016. I think it is very fitting as we see a political candidate get a lot of great press and lose the election. It reminds me of the conch. But right now, 82% in, fire is the most important thing. It is the 11th and we are seeing riots.

Like most people, I read this in a high school class. I remember enjoying the discussions it generated, though it's too gruesome a story to tempt me ever to read it again.
