Review: My second ever psychological thriller—after deciding I wouldn’t read another after PT reading the first one (The Housemaid—which was great too). Review: My second ever psychological thriller—after deciding I wouldn’t read another after PT reading the first one (The Housemaid—which was great too). It seems I’ve read too much from the romance genre and am seeking a slight change that’ll retain the excitement of reading; I have too much time on my hands these days and need books to fill it. So I need to retain that Bookish excitement, even if it means venturing into a genre I find somewhat disturbing, hehe.

So far, none of the two I’ve read have managed to shock me though. Already I know they aren’t a ‘hero’s tale’, so right from the start I already expect the worst from everyone mentioned—the MCs especially. Now, I’m starting to suspect psychological thrillers rely on an unreliable narrator for the *big twist*.

Before going to spoiler territory, I think the writing was very intelligent. After reading so many romance books in a short time, the plots began to feel repetitive and the writing and phrasing similar, so I read them speedily without really sitting on the prose/pages. I tried that here, but the writing style forced me to keep going back to paragraphs I sped past to really understand the message. Eventually, I knew I had to slow down and read to fully assimilate. And I think that’s good for readers from time to time.

The break down of psychology was also interesting to read about. It could get disturbing, have you thinking too deeply on parts of your life, sometimes even feel like a mirror to decisions you’ve made in your life. Yikes. Still it was intelligent. Though I greatly disagree with the theory that human behavior is fully formed in the time before memory. That’s way way way too simplistic, and almost unfair to people who work hard to be decent folk despite past traumas. Or even people who are inherently kind and positive, despite all the horrible things live has thrown at them. Human character is way too complex and subjective to generalize so.

Right from page one I just guessed Theo was the killer/culprit. Not because of anything he specifically did. Just because I know the unreliable narrator is a big part of the thriller genre and there was a chance it was the case here. (In other words, the unreliable narrator feels like a lazy cop-out and I hope other PTs I read will follow a different line). It made it hard to warm up to him, although there were times that I did. So when it happened in the end—especially in the chapters leading to it—I wasn’t shocked at all. I rather just felt complete repulsion for him.

I feel bad for how Alice ended. I don’t think she deserved to basically *die* in the end. ...more

There was a lot of hype for this book going in and I was not disappointed. I know some people say they saw the twist coming but I certainly did not until close to the end. So many intriguing characters that all seem plausible suspects. I’ve been reading a lot of books with doctor patient dynamics but this is better than most. 5 stars

This was a decent psychological read! Did Alicia kill her husband, why is Theo so invested in helping her and getting her to talk, or was it one of the other highly suspicious characters, all who seem to use or abuse Alicia in one way or another? Was it Max the adopted brother, Jean Felix her "friend"/gallery owner or her cousin Paul! All questions this author keeps you guessing until the very end! Imo this wasn't so much a thriller but more a psychological mystery. It didn't keep me on the edge ...more

What can I say? It is as amazing as many have said it was. The twist? Chef's kiss. I heard from many people that The Silent Patient was very predictable. I'm not trying to say I know all about psychological thrillers, but I read them a lot, and this one threw me through a hundred loops. I was left wide-eyed and gaping. Well. I didn’t figure out the plot twist until Part 4- Chapter 16, and even then I saw two scenarios.

Hated the ending, and from the beginning knew there were nothing but unreliable narrators.
