Summer’s End by Kristy Brown

Aided by his witchy sister Kit and their dubious leader Lennox. The prophecy states that he must kill her, but is the prophecy true? With the more Summer and Dooney learn, the less they trust their ‘friends’ and the closer they get to each other.
THE REVIEW: Summer’s End is a decent YA book, it’s not the best book, but I would recommend it for teens looking for a quick read. Summer’s End witches between Dooney’s POV and Summer’s POV, Dooney’s POV was often a rehashing of whatever the reader had already read in Summer’s POV, which makes for a repetitive chapter.
Chapter 2 was arduous and lead to the following notes: Dooney's POV and his dialogue to the reader about him being a bad person makes little sense as we know nothing about him. We assume it he was in the fire with Summer and started the fire, but the reader doesn't know that. One of his first words of dialogue is “You're judging me” but the reader isn't judging him because the reader doesn’t know him at this point we’re just inquisitive, it would be better to feed this curiosity instead of offering passive-aggressive dialogue. A good way to handle this exposition would have been, “I suppose you want to hear my story, why I ended up in this school full of morons. Well, I’ve got a job to do.” instead the reader gets, “My story? Not much to say, I guess. You’re judging me, everybody always does.”
This whole chapter exists to provide exposition for Dooney, but the wat it’s delivered makes for a monotonous chapter. Another minor gripe I have is the bad boy or grunge look that Dooney has going, at one point Dooney thinks, "I guess I don't fit" would it not be easier to make him fit by going for a more understated look since the world hinges on his ability to kill this girl? Would it not be better to make him more discreet? If he were more discreet, he couldn't be the bad boy, I guess. But it's not looks that are impactful it's actions, he doesn't have to fit the bad boy persona, all he needs to do is act the part, everything else is just unneeded. His bad-boy persona, however, is necessary to the plot and the Tyler subplot. However, there could have been tension without playing into the jock vs. bad boy cliché.
Overall the book is decent towards the climax the book becomes confusing. Large amounts of information are thrown at the reader before the book ends and it became confusing and at points, it was just downright unbelievable. All the info that is thrown at the reader was unnecessary. Certain things could have been left open so the reader could find out more in the sequel. I will check out the sequel and other books from the author.
Summer’s End
Grade: 60/100 C+ (I know this is an F in school but on the Lillith scale it’s a B-)

This was the first book I read by this author and it was quite a story. The adventure, mystery, twist, and turns keep you captivated as you learn Summer and Alex's story. And what a life for both, Alex brainwashed and Summer getting her memory back. This was such a great story and I can't wait to see more from this author. ...more
