Beautiful at times, scary at others, this is a good novel that only touches greatness a few times. The book is permeated with a sense of loss for things once beautiful and now gone. I was particularly struck with the suffering of the German people when the war started to turn against them and they realized how their leaders had mislead them.

Beautifully written, but not as haunting or profound as it so blatantly tries to be.
